South African Students may get a Free University Education
Recent reports have indicated that poor college students in South Africa may have access to a free college education in the near future. Of course, a variety of different theories exist regarding the changes that may be in store for students in need, but if rumors can be believed, good news for many may be coming soon.
A ministerial review committee has apparently been asked to carefully examine the way the current system operates in order to determine whether it can reasonably be reorganized to enhance the benefits that it offers to students throughout the country.
By many accounts, the review committee is expected to recommend a new policy that will provide a free education to undergraduate students who are from poor or lower class communities. Students from families that have a lower middle income may be granted greater opportunities for receiving student loans to finance their education.
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme was created in 1996 to provide students who are from poor families the ability to earn a college degree. This governing body is responsible for issuing loans and grants to students who are able to demonstrate a need, and they are also responsible for recovering monies that have been loaned to students for educational purposes.
This particular group, however, has been in the hot seat for a number of years now due to reports of mismanagement and financial difficulties. This fund continues to receive greater amounts of money each year, but unfortunately the demands that are placed upon them seem to exceed their capabilities.
While many rumors continue to circulate about the possible contents of the soon-to-be-released report, students in South Africa have been voicing their displeasure about the high fees that universities charge, as well as the financial exclusions that several institutions have implemented over the years. Because of this, it is certainly clear that the South African government needs to make some positive changes.
Some people would like to be excited about the prospect of higher education becoming more available to students from poor families, but the reality is that everything comes with a price. As long as funding continues to be a problem for universities throughout South Africa, it is highly unlikely that anyone will receive an education that is completely free. Changes to the current system could bring about an increase in opportunities for students who have outstanding academic records, though, which would be an improvement to the guidelines that are presently in place.
If the current policies that are in place can be changed, however, and modified to better represent the needs and interests of all of South Africa’s students regardless of race or family income, it could mean a better future is in sight for many people. A conservative middle ground that offers a reduction in fees, a better organized financial aid system, and a more equalized array of opportunities would be of benefit to everyone. It might also demonstrate to doubtful students that the government has a sincere interest in helping them obtain a quality education at an affordable price.
