Egypt’s Oldest Private University Opens New Schools
In February 2010, the American University in Cairo debuted three new schools to enhance their curriculum offerings to students. This university is the oldest private educational institution for higher education in Egypt, and it has been in existence for 90 years.
The new schools are business, graduate education, and global affairs and public policy. The American University in Cairo is able to boast that it is the only institution in the Middle East offering this type of education to students. As such, it is truly a groundbreaking event.
The School of Global Affairs and Public Policy has three primary academic departments: journalism and mass communication, public policy and administration, and law. The principal hope behind the development of these new programs is to provide students with the tools that are necessary for becoming actively involved in the making of global policies, and to encourage them to learn healthy, positive leadership skills.
The American University in Cairo has long been a regional leader in business, including the areas of education and research. It is believed that the development of a new business school will help students, companies that operate in the area, and local communities to develop stronger business practices not only in Egypt, but throughout the world.
The essential goals of the School of Business are to assist students in the areas of leadership, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Because the global business world is highly competitive, the university feels that students will now be better equipped to find success once they have completed their education.
The School of Business is among only 5% of all business schools that has received accreditation status from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International. This new school includes three major departments: accounting, management, and economics. It also has a number of executive education, research, and services centers that were designed with the intention of helping students achieve greater advancement in the business world.
The university’s new Graduate School of Education is intended to enhance research and practice among students, as well as professionals who are already working in the field. This school is offering professional teacher diploma programs in non-credit areas of study including early literacy education, integrated educational technology, educational leadership, and teaching for students who are majoring in a field other than education.
In a positive move towards improving community resources, the American University in Cairo is offering a variety of non-credit parenting courses to Egyptian’s who have an interest in improving their children’s future opportunities. Through these courses, parents can learn how to take more positive action in their children’s upbringing and education.
In addition, the university has plans to create the Middle East Institute on Higher Education in an effort to provide an abundance of research and information that relates to higher education in the region. In the Arab world, there is currently very little research available to citizens on the subject of higher education, so the Middle East Institute, for many, will be a welcome addition to the university’s offerings.
